As we look back to the year passed we feel a glimmer of hope for the coming year ahead. Despite 2024 being a chaotic year in the ocean world, with many ups and downs, here at Seaspiracy Org we witnessed first hand how media coverage and activism have the power to effect real change. From Paul Watson’s release, to bans on seismic blasting in both South Africa and Australia and Norway’s decision to pause deep sea mining.

This is why, we want to let you, our ocean family, know that we are currently fundraising to keep our organization going, and to make 2025 an even more epic year in saving the ocean!

🟢 Sei whales are back in Argentina after 100 years, proof that species can recover! - beautiful whales

🟢 Whales and dolphins now have legal personhood in the Pacific. A huge step forward!

🔴 Argentinian senators blocked the creation of an important marine sanctuary known as the Agujero Azul to favour foreign fishing fleets.

🔴 China unveils deep sea mining vessels with intention of exploring next year.

🟢 Norway postponed deep-sea mining. A win for the oceans 👏

Japan auctions fin whale

🔴 Japan killed its first fin whale in commercial whaling in the last 50 years, and sold its toxic meat.

🔴 Spain wants to start octopus farming.

🟢 California banned octopus farming. Finally, a victory for extremely intelligent creatures!

🔴 Whaling nations blocked a South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary. More threats to these vulnerable species.

🟢 The Maldives government rejected longline fishing licenses, protecting their ocean.

🔴 Only 8 vaquitas were identified this year in Sea Shepherd’s Vaquita Survey. The species is on the brink of extinction.

🟢 Greece banned bottom trawling in all its Marine Protected Areas by 2030. A huge win for ocean life!

🟢 Sperm whales were discovered to use their own phonetic alphabet, how amazing is that?!

🟢 Shell won’t start seismic blasting off South Africa after massive activism pressure.

🔴 Krill overfishing continues to skyrocket, threatening the Antarctic food chain.

🟢 Activism stopped seismic blasting off South Australia, proving the power of people!

🟢 Paul Watson was arrested this year for his work protecting marine life, but thanks to extreme global pressure, he was freed.

🔴 Bloom Foundation unveiled how huge trawlers operate within marine protected areas in the EU.
