First Nations along the coast of British Columbia and the government of Canada announced the designation of Tang.ɢwan — ḥačxwiqak — Tsig̱is as a Marine Protected Area (MPA), a large, ecologically unique area formerly known as the Offshore Pacific Area of Interest.
The MPA hasn’t banned commercial fishing BUT it has banned any use of fishing gear that contacts the seabed, such as bottom trawls, dredges, traps or bottom longlines are fully prohibited.
