Officials at Finnish Customs are weighing up the charges to be brought against five individuals interviewed in connection with the importation of around 36,000kgs of whale meat from Norway into Finland in 2022, in the form of sausages to be used as food for sled dogs.

Law enforcement authorities from France, Portugal and Spain, supported by Europol, have arrested 62 members of multiple organised criminal groups involved in the illegal fishing of contaminated molluscs in Portugal and Spain.

The colossal shark, saved from an abandoned net off the UK coast, was found dead just a few days following its rescue. The common thresher shark, weighing roughly 200kg, was spotted tangled in a ghost net by volunteers.
🇲🇽 Mexican government seized more than 1,500 tons of illegal fishery products in 2024
Conapesca, a Mexican federal agency that manages the nation’s fisheries, partnered with the Mexican Navy, SEMAR, to conduct 14,572 land patrols and 2,810 maritime patrols over the course of the year. In total, the government confiscated more than 11,240 pieces of fishing gear, 298 vehicles, 4 large vessels, and 185 small vessels as part of those enforcement activities.

The Alaska Pollock Fishery Alliance (APFA) is celebrating the defeat of a trawling ban in Prince William Sound (PWS) after Alaska’s Board of Fisheries shot down the proposal.

🇦🇺 South Australia bans fishing of many sharks and rays in its waters.
The state government said the new rules prohibit both recreational and commercial fishing of critically endangered species such as the whitefin swellshark, oceanic whitetip shark, gray nurse shark and green sawfish; as well as endangered ones like the greeneye spurdog, southern dogfish and basking shark. Additionally, fishing of all stingarees in the genus Urolophus and skates in the genera Dipturus and Dentiraja are banned.

Washington joins the rest of the US West Coast in protecting its coast from the environmental destruction that fish farms bring, hopefully BC in Canada is next.
